A Rough Week

Last week our core router failed (completely unexpectedly) while the backup router was down for repairs
Since then, we've brought up a second spare core router... which has crashed twice, also unexpectedly and equally inexplicably. On the upside, since it's a redundant unit, nobody feels those effects.
But now our SAN/main file server has gone offline, and while we're trying to get it back online, it's also required a technician to be dispatched to the datacentre, and then the problem solving starts.

We're really sorry, and really not happy about this, and we've known that some of these machines were needing a bit more TLC than they were getting... well they're going to get it now. Or replaced.

What's OpenDNS?

Here, I'll let David Pogue at the New York Times explain:

Oh - And if you want to use OpenDNS and you're a PPPoE High-Speed user, just let us know and we can set it up on our end - just for you! Don't want OpenDNS? We can set you up with Google's, or Level3's or any combination thereof. It's a pretty easy adjustment for us to make.

Feeling The Love

Apparently today is Sysadmin day and we didn't even notice... but a lot of other people did!

Twitter Search

Thanks all y'all.
Incidentally you'll notice there's a lot of Apple/Mac/OSX going on there, including us. I'm not sure how many people know this, but we've always tried to be a Mac-Friendly ISP; we support OSX and treat it as a first-class citizen... unlike Windows! (I kid! I kid! ... actually, maybe not ;) If you didn't know, I personally have a MacPro, MacBook Pro, iPhone, Touch, Mini, Xserve...

Anyway, lately we've had a few customers with Airport Express/Extreme and TimeCapsule sign up for our High Speed ADSL products... and things haven't worked out well with regards to the PPPoE system (Bell makes us use that.) After a few frustrated weeks of doing packet-traces, hacks, hours on the phone with Apple Care, I (Myke) actually emailed Steve Jobs, the next day I got a call from the Executive Relations office to setup a conference call with Apple's Engineering team..!

At this point we're just getting the Legal/Non-Disclosure agreements worked out, then we'll be testing some patches of theirs against our system. In the meantime, Ben (our DSL router guy) has been writing patches & hacks for our end, to try and alleviate or work-around the Apple bugs. You might've noticed the other night we actually got them working, unfortunately the Apple fixes broke a bunch of Linksys & Dlink routers - so we're still working on it! (It is bizarre to look at the PPPoE sessions on our end and see only 2/3rds of your customer base online!)

In short, we're working on it... stay tuned here and/or on Twitter and we'll let you know when we think we've got it licked.

Ontario Voltage Reductions

Later today, the IESO (the body governing power in Ontario) is doing 2 planned voltage reductions. See here for more info.

Given all the recent exercise of the UPSes & Generators at the datacenter, we're not too worried about having any big problems, but you never know what might happen. Head's up.

Ugly Evening for High-Speed (ADSL)

Looks like our upstream ADSL provider is having serious issues this evening, things have been unstable or nearly unusable since about 2130. We have limited information at this time, but it's very wide-spread and is being worked on by many people right now.

Toronto Situation Post-Power Failure

Hydro Tranformer Explosion in Toronto:

Power went out this afternoon in Toronto; UPSes & Generators worked as expected, but cooling systems have not... and several other ISPs & NSPs are having continuing issues.

In other words - we're okay, for now, a bit warm, (+10C) but surviving.

All Clear.

Everything looks alright. Just watching/waiting for everyone's connections to come back up. We had an extra delay because the router wanted a filesystem check (yay fsck...) since it's uptime was > 819 days. Can't blame it... or skip it.

Anyway, all our speeds and duplexes look good, people are logging in. I'd call that a successful and complete move.

I'll be working on Jigsaw, the secondary core router this evening, but likely will swap it out tomorrow during the day. Nobody should feel or notice that though.
