Power shutdown of our Toronto facility tonight - 11PM On March 8th, due to a failing power supply system, we made an emergency transfer of all our Toronto equipment to a temporary power system. Tonight we will be switching back to primary power and a shiny new UPS. There will be an outage at 11PM tonight which will affect all of our Toronto-based services:

This includes:
- ADSL Internet (PPPoE & HSA)
- Web-hosting
- Virtual Private Servers (VPS/Jail/OpenVZ/KVM)
- Colocated & Dedicated Servers
- transit links and interconnections

And just like last time...

We will be very busy at 11PM working to get services back online as quickly as possible. If you have the means, please follow along on our 'blog at http://status.servernorth.net/ and for even more high-paced updates, our Twitter stream is here: https://twitter.com/ServerNorth

If you have colocated servers or VPS/Virtual servers, please begin shutting them down around 10:30PM.

We hope to have all services up as quickly as possible, but as we are cold-starting most of our network, there are sequences and certain adjustments that need to be made.

Our cable Internet (via Rogers & Cogeco), enterprise/IMAP E-Mail services and Montréal facility will not be shutdown, however some things may affected as annexed-to-Toronto services such as (reverse) DNS are briefly unavailable.

Hopefully this is the last of the power work that needs to be done for a long time!

Over all, we hope to have everything restored within the hour, and we will narrate on Twitter as we go.

Best regards,

Mike Geiger & The ServerNorth.net Crew

PS: Fundamentally this means we're unplugging the power cords from one outlet to another - 20 seconds of work, but it's all the shutdown & start-up sequences that will take all the time.

PPS: Yes, this is largely a cut & paste of the March 8th E-mail... people seemed to have liked it.

PPPS: If you are receiving this email, you are affected.

Access Pricing Changes Dear Valued Customers,

Server North Inc. has been supplying Canadians with quality internet for the last 7 years.
In all that time we've NEVER raised Internet Access prices, because we care about you!

Late in 2011, the CRTC changed the rules for ISPs, under pressure from the big 5 Telcos.
These new rules have made it much more expensive for us to connect you to the Internet you know and love.

These cost increases are forcing us to introduce new end-user pricing.

High-Speed Residential ADSL Service will change to $45.00/mo, plus HST.
Express Broadband Cable Internet Service will change to $45.00/mo, plus HST.
Lite Broadband Cable Internet Service will change to $35.00/mo, plus HST.
Extreme Broadband Cable Internet Service will change to $60.00/mo, plus HST.

These new rates are effective May 1st, 2012.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time.

Thank you for being a great customer.
We haven't changed, and will continue to provide you with the best service we can.

Best Regards,

Mike Geiger & Chris Delaney
Server North Inc.

Back on Utility Power We were informed a few minutes ago that we're back on utility power, which means things are starting to wrap up. This isn't an 'all clear', but it's the light at the end of the tunnel.

We've also almost finished upgrading the OS on our SAN...

That Dull Roar You Hear ... is a lot of generators.

So far so good, lots of geeks & techs cooling their heels while the sparkys work...

ANNUAL SHUTDOWN & CLEANING OF THE INTERNET A Reminder: This Saturday, from 6AM till 6PM our Toronto datacenter will be running on diesel generator power.

In fact, the whole building will be... which means with a few dozen generators and probably double the number of UPSes in action - there's plenty of things that can go wrong.
Sometimes it happens to us, sometimes our vendors or friendly competitors, or even mean ones - but basically, stuff might break this weekend and that's just the way it's going to be. Last year it was just the elevators and emergency lights that went out. NBD.

Can we recommend a good book?

We expect we will follow a similar procedure to last time, with similar timing and outage lengths.
