Ever heard of the 'Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services'? ... because I never had before the CBC posted an interesting article about 'em. Read it here...

Short note about this afternoon's disruption It's not really clear what happened around 13:40 Eastern time today, but we do know that TorIX.net suffered a major event, at the same time as Cogent and Bell-Nexxia. We only peer with the former, but the latter two failures are definitely related and certainly could cause problems for people using those networks to get to ours.

There should be a post-mortem from the TorIX board later, although it's likely not for public distribution, I'll try to follow up here.

TorIX.net is doing exteneded maintenance tonight. TorIX, the Toronto Internet Exchange, will be doing some (emergency) extended maintenance early Saturday (tomorrow) morning from 01:00 to 05:00, we will become disconnected from TorIX and our network will need some time to heal automatically, but we've taken all the steps to make these events not last more than a few moments.

Some excerpts from the notice...

All clear. Everything is fully operational again. We'll be working on automating some of that failover so an event like that will result in a few seconds of unreachability as opposed to several minutes.

Toronto reachable now. We've routed around the switch failure for now, most services are available again, but some ADSL connections may still have issues. If you do, let us know.

Toronto colo partially unreachable Some people will find they cannot connect to our servers in Toronto, an upstream switch appears to have crashed. We're working on routing around the issue.
