P0 VPS server hung & restarted Just rebooted P0.SVRNi.ca and restarted all the jails. Sorry for the interruption.

It looks to me like userland was in an indeterminate state, where the monitoring agents were still operable, but most other functions were not working.

P0 is due to be de/recommissioned in the next 6-8 weeks anyway, so hopefully we don't encounter this problem again.

If you want to know which jailhost your VPS is running in, uname -a will give you a good idea.

Surprise DSL maintenance is surprisingly finished! All Done.

We've now got the L2TP stream (the DSL feed from our uplink) going through a private channel now, so latency should be lower, and the network load across our other links and infrastructure is reduced. The other upshot is the packets are bigger now. We've still got to tune some more elements, but this will help with certain login issues and gives us some flexibility in the future for making weird & wonderful configurations.

Surprise DSL maintenance! Apparently we're getting reconfigured imminently. Should reduce latency, but there may be a couple of blips.

Follow-up to Montréal Outage Between 1814 and 1835 (Eastern) this evening, our datacenter in Montréal experienced a period of unreachability. By 1932, our upstream provider contacted me and gave the following explanation:

"... it seems that either the GBIC or the fibre cable between the switch that you are presently on and our edge network is faulty. When it unexpectedly went down today we replaced both the cable and the GBIC and our now analyzing which one of the two was the culprit."

We're having further discussions about redundancy and capacity planning. I've been working with these guys for about a year, they're a good bunch with similar principles to Server North, so I expect things will work out nicely. If not - we'll switch, but at this point I see no reason to.

Some ADSL Tweaking & Tuning this weekend. This upcoming late Friday night, we're planning on upgrading our ADSL router software in order to resolve some clients not being able to login properly. We're doing this on Friday night so that we have the weekend to tweak and tune any issues that may arise - but we don't forsee anything getting worse by these changes.

What we're doing is getting some proxy-authentication and packet-size fixes done. There was a bump in the middle of the night about 3 days ago where we had our upstream provider reconfigure their switch to handle Jumbo packets with us. As result... you'll probably be able to increase your MTU all the way up to 1492 - but that's one of the things we need to test over the weekend.
